A Simple Model for Launching a MOWW Military History Book Club

Starting a local military history book club is a simple and effective way to build fellowship, engage prospective members, and promote informed discussion on national security and military affairs.

A typical model begins with a volunteer organizer (Chair) selecting a current military history or national security–related book that is widely available (for example, through Amazon or local bookstores).  The organizer then invites a small group—often 15–20 current and prospective MOWW members—to participate in a monthly discussion.  Many chapters have found success hosting these meetings over breakfast, such as at a restaurant, country club, or private home, though chapters are encouraged to choose a format and time that best suits their local community.

The book club is designed to be interactive.  A moderator guides the discussion, encourages participation, and invites attendees to share relevant professional or personal experiences related to the topic.  Participants are encouraged to invite friends and colleagues to future meetings, helping the group grow organically.

In addition to discussing the selected book, chapters may use these gatherings to:

  • Share information about upcoming local events that support military veterans, active-duty service members, and law enforcement professionals
  • Highlight opportunities for community engagement, briefings, or service-oriented activities
  • Foster awareness of other military-supporting organizations, as appropriate

In North Texas, for example, monthly military history book club breakfasts have served as an effective platform for encouraging broader engagement with organizations such as the MOWW, Air & Space Forces Association, the Association of the U.S. Army, the Jewish War Veterans, and the Navy League.  Each chapter should tailor its approach based on local interests and relationships.

Some chapters may also choose to share publicly available information on military advocacy and education programs offered by partner organizations. Any such engagement should remain nonpartisan and voluntary, consistent with MOWW policies and guidelines.
