Military Appreciation Month
Honoring Service, Sacrifice, and Leadership
Each May, since the 1999 Congressional resolution establishing Military Appreciation Month, our nation pauses to honor the service, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment of the men and women who wear—and have worn—the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. For the Companions of the Military Order of the World Wars, this month carries special importance. It aligns deeply with our mission to promote patriotic education, national security, good citizenship, and service to our country.
A Biblical Foundation for Military Leadership
Military Appreciation Month also invites us to reflect on the long and honorable tradition of military leadership found in Scripture. One of the most profound examples is King David, the shepherd boy who became a warrior, commander, and king. David’s life embodies the virtues we hold dear: courage, humility, faith, and devotion to duty.
David’s military leadership was marked not only by battlefield victories but by his unwavering reliance on God. His candid prayers, praises, and reflections—captured in the Psalms—reveal a warrior whose strength flowed from his faith. His example reminds us that military service is not only an act of national defense but also an expression of character, conviction, and calling.
As Companions of the Military Order of the World Wars, we recognize that Military Appreciation Month, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day form a meaningful season of gratitude. It is a time to honor those who serve, those who support them, and those who have laid down their lives in defense of freedom.
May we continue to uphold their legacy through our own leadership, service, and prayers.
